On 22-25 November 2007, BLOC will present Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular comic opera, The Mikado, at the Auderghem Cultural Centre. Performed more often than any other piece of musical theatre , The Mikado has delighted audiences all around the world for well over a hundred years.
The plot concerns the timorous Koko, Lord High Executioner to the Mikado, who is in danger of losing his own head because he's never chopped off anyone else's. He finally selects a willing victim named Nanki-Poo, who, unfortunately for him, is the son of the Mikado. Further complications ensue from the fact that both Ko-Ko and Nanki-Poo want to marry the delightful Yum-Yum, who also happens to be ward-of-court to Ko-Ko.
The action takes place in an imaginary 1930s English seaside resort. The universal relevance of W S Gilbert’s scintillating satire ensures that the same high level of wit and humour is found in this refreshing new setting as in the original version set in Japan. Sir Arthur Sullivan's music, also with a 1930s flavour, will, as usual, delight us with its unforgettable songs and its general joyfulness.
BLOC is delighted to welcome back David Miller as Music Director and Barbara Campbell as Stage Director, a ' dream team ' which made such a great success of BLOC's Gipsy Princess in the year 2000. |
